A sump pump is just a pit or a hole in the foundation of a home usually dug at the lowest point of the basement floor with the cement sloping toward the hole. A pump is installed in the hole which is designed to remove accumulating water by pumping it up and out of the home. Sump pumps can also be installed in the crawlspace of a home.

Why Do Some Homes Need a Sump Pump?

If your home is located in an area of high moisture content in the soil or if the neighborhood has a high water table table, you may need a sump pump installed. Also if you or your neighbors experience constant basement flooding, installing a sump dump can help avoid this situation.  A sump pump protects the interior of your basement such as flooring and drywall. It also protects the “contents or personal belongings’ in the basement such as furniture and storage items. It protects these items from accumulating water which can allow mold, mildew, to grow. Which in turn, can also attract bug infestation.

The cost to install a sump dump averages about $1,500 – $3,000. But the cost is worth it to avoid water damage in your basement or crawlspace.

Several times/year you want to check your sump pump and make sure it’s power source is working and its free of debris.

If a Sump Pump fails, Do I have Home Insurance Coverage for Damage?

Unfortunately, the answer is probably not. Most home insurance policies sold in Colorado do not cover ‘sump pump’ failure. But contact your insurance agent or carrier and ask if you can endorse/add a rider to the policy to provide coverage. This is why it’s very important to check your sump pump several times a year and make sure it’s in good working order.
