Safety Tips for Craigslist Buyers and Sellers

    Craigslist is a dream come true for those always on the lookout for a great deal but it can also put you in a dangerous situation if you aren’t cautious. Here is what Jefferson County Police posted after a Craigslist related robbery occurred which includes great tips to keep you safe while you’re on the hunt for the next bargain!

In light of the recent armed robbery at a South Jefferson County home involving items for sale on Craigslist, it’s good to review some safety practices when dealing with the sale of property from your residence and elsewhere.

LOCATION
Consider meeting in a public place, instead of at your residence. If this isn’t feasible, have another person or persons there with you. Also think about having someone with you at your public place meeting as well.

TIMING
Set up appointments during business hours if selling an item that requires a title transfer or the exchange of a large sum of money.

LET SOMEONE KNOW
Tell a friend or family member where you’re going, what you’re meeting about and when you expect to return.

PHONE
Take your cell phone.

MONEY
Do not travel with large amounts of cash. Conduct transactions at a financial institution where funds can be verified and quickly deposited. Never send or accept a wire transfer of funds. Read all disclaimers provided by www.craigslist.com.

MERCHANDISE
Do not sign over titles or hand over property until a payment has been received and verified. Consider researching your potential purchase ahead of time, to spot possible counterfeit merchandise.

BE CAREFUL
Trust your instincts – if anything seems suspicious, leave.
